Find your distraction.

R0016015

Have you noticed that your best ideas come when you are doing something un-related: doing some sport, having a drink, listening to music, riding on home.

The brain seems to connect the dots to a problem better when it is not staring at the problem for hours.

Our really inspirational ideas come when our mind wanders, when it relaxes, or when it has been given something else to do.

Our brain needs distractions in order for it to solve complex problems. Especially, those that require a leap of imagination.

When we take our mind off of a problem, something rather interesting happens. Our sub-conscious goes to work on solving it.

The sub-conscious is a powerful thing.

It’s less linear. It’s less logical. It takes all the information in and rearranges things in ways you wouldn’t do normally.

That’s why you are more likely to have remarkable, breakthrough ideas if you can trust yourself to let it do the work for you.

So don’t sit at the desk.

Go for a run. Listen to music. Drink whisky.

Find your distraction.

And you will find more interesting answers too.

friend tweeted me a link to this post as one of my favourite phrases is "you can't boil the ocean". From now on I shall indeed simply "Be narrow" - love it.
