There are two garden centers just on the outskirts of Cardigan.
One a national chain.
One a small independent.
They are literally next door to each other.
The independent can't beat them on price or the size of their range.
So he has to compete by being brilliant.
By knowing his stuff.
By being really, really helpful.
By cutting you some slack.
By putting things right when they go wrong with a smile.
By knowing you.
By selling things of quality rather shifting lots of units.
By giving you great advice without making you feel like an idiot.
By always being positive.
I see his customers walk in and just enjoy the banter.
He makes their day.
He has time for everyone.
And he is always, always busy.
Next door is always, always on sale.

Great example. I got a leaflet from Glasses Direct the other day and was thinking about why I wouldn't get my glasses from them, a similar reason as to why you would shop at the non-chain garden centre. Who wants to shop in the same shops no matter what city you are in?? We need more independants and we need to support them.
Some great thoughts on your blog
